Frequently Asked Questions

Deck Construction & Installation

Do these decks need sonotubes?

No. Ducky Decks are engineered to be free‑floating, free‑standing, and fully adjustable. Each deck includes built‑in plates that can be staked to the ground for added stability.

Yes. These decks were designed for easy installation by homeowners or installers. Created by an above‑ground pool installer with 30+ years of experience and over 1,000 installations, Ducky Decks assemble in about 2 hours with two people using an impact gun. Add approximately 1 hour if installing the Grand Staircase.

Because the decks are over 36″, many towns require a building permit. Check with your local building inspector. All Ducky Decks are engineered, stamped, and meet safety requirements.

Deck Materials & Maintenance

Do I have to treat the cedar floor?

Yes. Cedar is durable, but applying an oil‑based stain once per year helps maintain color, reduce cracking, and extend the life of the wood.

Yes. All natural wood develops cracks as it dries. Cedar also contains knots, and some may loosen or fall out over time. Staining helps minimize this, and some customers use wood glue to secure knots.

PVC requires no treatment. Simply wash it occasionally to keep it clean. It will maintain its appearance for a lifetime.

PVC is temperature‑controlled. It may get warm in direct sunlight but will not reach burning temperatures like some composite materials.

Finish Options

What is Mill Finish?

Mill Finish is the most economical option. It is raw aluminum straight from the factory. The quality is identical to all other deck options, and many customers enjoy the natural look or polish it for a shiny finish.

Yes. To keep costs down, the raw aluminum is not polished or sanded. These minor blemishes can be removed by the customer if desired. When powder coated, these small imperfections are completely covered.

Each deck includes a small bottle of touch‑up paint. Scratches can occur during shipping, installation, or handling, so keep the touch‑up paint with your pool supplies for future use.

Deck Expansion & Compatibility

I bought a deck last year and want a larger one. Can I add on?

Yes. You can add extension sections or stacking options at any time. Many customers expand their deck year after year.

No. All Ducky Deck panels are universal. Simply move the deck into place around the new pool. Because the decks float over the pool and do not attach to it, they work with any brand or size.

Yes. The radius deck will work on the rounded side of the oval pool. Alternatively, you can remove the pie wedge and connect the 4×7 panels to fit the straight side of the oval pool.

Comparing Ducky Decks to Wood Decks

Is it cheaper to build my own wood deck?

Initially, yes. A wood deck may cost less upfront. However, wood decks typically last about 10 years before needing major repairs or replacement. They are also permanent structures built on sonotubes, which means:

  • They may need to be dismantled to replace a liner or service the pool
  • They cannot be easily moved
  • They have limited resale flexibility

Ducky Decks are designed to last a lifetime, can be moved to the other side of the pool, taken with you if you move, or resold. They also disassemble faster than they are built.

Staircases & Accessories

Will the Grand Staircase work with my existing wood deck?

Yes. The Grand Staircase attaches using two plates, two bolts, and two nuts. It racks and adjusts to fit many applications and is available in 3‑step or 6‑step configurations depending on deck height.

Heat & Comfort

Do the decks get hot?

Any surface in direct sunlight can get warm. Ducky Decks may get hot, but typically only reach a “very warm” temperature. Splashing a small amount of pool water on the deck cools it quickly. We have not received complaints about the decks becoming uncomfortably hot.
